Safeguarding

Our approach
JustBe takes safeguarding seriously. We are a connection platform — we help volunteers find roles with schools and other organisations. The organisations that recruit volunteers remain fully responsible for safer recruitment, including any required background checks and ongoing supervision.
What JustBe does
- Verifies that schools registering on the platform exist in the UK Government's Get Information About Schools (GIAS) register, using the URN provided at sign-up.
- Provides organisations with a private community space so they can control who joins via a join code.
- Lets organisations review and accept or reject applications from volunteers.
- Acts on credible reports of abuse, harassment, or misuse of the platform.
What JustBe does not do
- We do not perform DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks on volunteers.
- We do not verify a volunteer's identity, employment history, or qualifications.
- We do not confirm that the person registering on behalf of a school has authority to do so.
- We do not supervise interactions that take place off the platform.
Responsibilities of organisations
If you are an organisation recruiting volunteers — particularly for roles involving children, vulnerable adults, or any safeguarding-sensitive activity — you are responsible for:
- Carrying out DBS checks at the appropriate level for the role.
- Following statutory safer recruitment guidance (e.g. Keeping Children Safe in Education for schools in England).
- Verifying references and right-to-work where applicable.
- Providing safeguarding training and a clear point of contact for concerns.
- Supervising volunteers in line with your own policies.
Responsibilities of volunteers
- Comply with the safeguarding policies of the organisation you volunteer for.
- Complete any DBS checks or training the organisation requires before starting.
- Report any safeguarding concerns to the organisation's designated safeguarding lead.
Reporting a concern
If you have a concern about a user's conduct on the platform, email help@justbe.app. We will respond promptly and may suspend accounts where appropriate.
If a child or adult is at immediate risk of harm, contact the police on 999. For non-emergency concerns about a child, contact your local authority's children's services or the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000.
